Encarta Discontinued (百科事典エンカルタの打ち切り)

Microsoft expressed that it's encyclopedia software Encarta would be discontinued this year. It's a small news, but big news as a trend.

When this software was on sale in 1997, I was very surprised. "Oh, Microsoft also conquer the market of encyclopedia!" However nowadays, people use an online free encyclopedia, Wikipedia. The following are quotations from the above link.

Why are these Encarta Web sites and software products being discontinued?
Encarta has been a popular product around the world for many years. However, the category of traditional encyclopedias and reference material has changed. People today seek and consume information in considerably different ways than in years past. As part of Microsoft’s goal to deliver the most effective and engaging resources for today’s consumer, it has made the decision to exit the Encarta business.

Microsoft doesn't mention the Wikipedia directly but they can't help being conscious about it.
